The Copper Iris (Iris fulva) is native from southern Illinois and Missouri south to Mississippi and Louisiana, and along the coast to Georgia. Its natural home is along streams, riverbanks, and freshwater marshes, most commonly found in the MIssissippi River Valley, and it’s an excellent addition to gardens that see an abundance of rain or frequent watering.

The Copper Iris colonizes by rhizomes, so thin them out if they spread too vigorously. This Iris grows best with at least 6 hours of sun each day, and attracts hummingbirds and bees to your yard. If the leaves don’t get too wet or too dry, they’ll likely stick around through winter. Cut and pair these Irises with purple and blue varieties for a brilliant floral display.
